Zambia bans hunting for a year

The Zambian Government has taken the bold step of banning hunting for this year; a decision that many will welcome. But like all decisions of this sort, it is controversial and leads to many a interesting debate, particularly around the campfires of the camps and lodges of Zambia.
Whatever your views on the matter, the decision will impact upon the revenue that the Zambian Wildlife Authority received from this activity. It will also impact locally on jobs and could put areas currently set aside for hunting (still pristine Africa) under threat from development in other ways.
It is never a clear cut “right” decision.
However we as travellers and tour operators should do our bit by supporting the decision and trying to fill the economic gap by raising the profile of Zambia as a wonderful wildlife experience. It is still one of the under explored areas of Africa and you can truly feel as though you are experience Africa unspoilt.
Their walking safaris, particularly in South Luangwa where you can walk from one camp to another, do give you time to see all the small animals, insects and birds which you could well miss while riding in a 4×4.
