Winter in Yellowstone, Wyoming…
Yellowstone is a very special place all year round but the magic of Yellowstone really comes alive in the wintertime, when a pristine blanket of white snow covers everything and most of the park is closed off to cars.
Snowshoe under a bluebird sky as you watch steam rise from geothermal pools. Take in the scenery while you zoom through the forest on a rumbling snowmobile. Spot winter wildlife as you glide along the cross-country ski trails that zigzag across untouched backcountry.
With up to 400 inches of snow falling on parts of Yellowstone National Park, you would think that access will be impossible. Well you are partly right as car traffic can only drive in to Mammoth Springs in the far north of the Park. However if you are willing to be adventurous and take to a snowmobile, put on snow shoes or ski through the untouched backcountry, you can be a part of the wilderness that has little human activity to show and full of animals battling to survive the conditions.
Accommodation is much reduced with just 2 of the Parks lodges open, although there are places to stay just on the edge of Yellowstone, such as Jackson and West Yellowstone. You need to consider booking your accommodation as soon as possible as places are very limited and this is a destination growing in popularity.
Then you need to consider what activities you want to do while you are here. Only authorised guides are allowed in to the Park and most only take small groups. So, if you want to track wolves or snowmobile in the Park (numbers of machines are limited) you are well advised to book as soon as possible.
There are a whole host of activities to ensure you make the most of this pristine winter landscape. Perhaps try something new such as dog sledding, snowshoeing or cross country skiing or join a photographic workshop to ensure your photos make the most of this unique experience. And just outside the Park are the superb ski resorts of Jackson Hole and Big Sky in Montana – why not combine your Yellowstone adventure with some skiing or snowboarding.
It is truly an amazing destination that could draw you back again.
