Turtle Sightings in Pangkor Laut Resort

Today we received a newsletter from Pangkor Laut Resort about the fantastic news that they are now starting to see turtles around their part of the island.
Over the last three months both Green and Hawksbill turtles have been spotted by staff and guests of Pangkor Laut Resort in the waters surrounding the Sea Villas and, on occasion, around the Spa Villas.
As this is not a common occurrence, Pangkor Laut Resort’s resident naturalist, Aris believes this may be due to a slight change in the turtles’ nesting patterns, as they normally nest on a beach on the Malaysian mainland, which lies north of the island.
Earlier this year, Pangkor Laut Resort even rescued a juvenile Hawksbill turtle that had been caught in a fisherman’s net. Due to her poor condition, the resort quickly contacted the Malaysia Fisheries Department which had the facilities to look after a turtle suffering from illness and infection. Happily, the turtle made a full recovery and was released back into the sea.
While the resort has had a few small programmes for turtle conservation and rehabilitation in place since 2013, given the increase of turtle sightings they are now looking into setting up their own turtle hatchery and are collaborating with the Malaysia Fisheries Department as well as Gaya Island Resort’s own Marine Biologist, Scott Mayback, who set up the Gaya Island Resort Marine Centre, for technical advice and support on this project.
Pangkor Laut is a privately owned island located three miles off the West Coast of Malaysia. With so much to see and do at this luxury resort it makes it a great place to have your honeymoon or any other special occasion holiday.
