The lure of the Winelands of the Western Cape
For many years now, we at Experience Holidays, have been huge fans of the winelands of the Western Cape, not only the well established names of Constantia, also those of Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek and the newer names of the Robertson Valley.
I am delighted to tell you all that we have a new option for well priced accommodation in Franschhoek – Chez Max is a two person apartment, well located in a central position and run by two gentlemen who I (Jackie) have known for a good many years. I am delighted to add this to our portfolio of selected properties.
Franschhoek is one of the oldest towns in the Western Cape, its names literally meaning ‘French Corner’. Its history as we know it started, I believe in 1688 when 176 French Hugenot refugees were given land in the Olifantshoek (Elephants Corner). Many of the original farm names still remain as now well known wineries, and in turn, many excellent restaurants now call this home.
The Hugenot Museum, which stands at one end of the town is well worth a visit, and as you walk through the town, you will see that much of the original Dutch architecture remains.
Franschhoek fits beautifully into a carefully planned south coast drive, which might include some time in Cape Town and be followed by a visit to the new vineyards of the Robertson Valley, the Little Karoo, the famous Garden Route and ending with either some relaxation on the beaches of Jeffrey’s Bay and St Francis Bay, or possibly some game viewing at one of our favourite game reserves in the Eastern Cape…..
Which brings me on to another topic…
You may have seen the item on the white lions at the Big Cat Sanctuary in Smarden the other day – Pumba Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape has a breeding pair of white lion and some cubs, now growing up. For many, this is one of the highlights of a holiday such as this and a wonderful way to round off an exciting holiday.
