Gaya Island, Malohom Bay, is set within the Tunku Abdul Marine Park, a group of 5 islands located off Kota Kinabalu.  Fringed with coral reefs, they pride themselves on the marine wildlife and coral reef restoration.

The endangered Sea Turtle is one of the marine wildlife animals that Gaya Island are keen to help and to date they have helped and released four turtles back into the sea – Bobby, Ninja, Carman and Nick Jr all of which have undergone rehabilitation and research.

Guests recently staying on the island were lucky enough to be joined by a gentle green turtle on their Coral Garden snorkelling excursion with the resorts Marine Biologist – This sounds like an amazing experience.

If this is something that you would like to add to your bucket list, why not get in touch to enquire about how you can put together your own holiday and look forward to making amazing memories on an amazing island getaway. Please contact us for more details .

This special early morning visit took place on the beach right under one of the resort’s sun umbrellas as the sun began to rise.
Once her eggs had been safely laid, this majestic creature returned to the South China Sea.

The Turtle Hatchery currently holds 25 nests and a total of 2274 eggs – of these, two batches of hatchlings have already been released. Guests have enjoyed witnessing this amazing experience and the Nest Adoption programme has become a great hit.

Not far from one of our favourite resorts in Malaya, Tanjong Jara Resort, is a protected beach where the endangered beach green turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.

These beautiful turtles are coming on to the beach now and until mid September. Guests have the chance to have a guided tour of the beach to watch this amazing event. Because these turtles are so rare, the eggs are taken to a hatchery to protect them from predators – human or otherwise.

Later in the season lucky guests at Tanjong Jara Resort can help with the release of the newly hatched be returned to the sea.

Turtle Sightings in Pangkor Laut Resort

Today we received a newsletter from Pangkor Laut Resort about the fantastic news that they are now starting to see turtles around their part of the island.

Over the last three months both Green and Hawksbill turtles have been spotted by staff and guests of Pangkor Laut Resort in the waters surrounding the Sea Villas and, on occasion, around the Spa Villas.

As this is not a common occurrence, Pangkor Laut Resort’s resident naturalist, Aris believes this may be due to a slight change in the turtles’ nesting patterns, as they normally nest on a beach on the Malaysian mainland, which lies north of the island.

Earlier this year, Pangkor Laut Resort even rescued a juvenile Hawksbill turtle that had been caught in a fisherman’s net. Due to her poor condition, the resort quickly contacted the Malaysia Fisheries Department which had the facilities to look after a turtle suffering from illness and infection. Happily, the turtle made a full recovery and was released back into the sea.

While the resort has had a few small programmes for turtle conservation and rehabilitation in place since 2013, given the increase of turtle sightings they are now looking into setting up their own turtle hatchery and are collaborating with the Malaysia Fisheries Department as well as Gaya Island Resort’s own Marine Biologist, Scott Mayback, who set up the Gaya Island Resort Marine Centre, for technical advice and support on this project.

Pangkor Laut is a privately owned island located three miles off the West Coast of Malaysia.  With so much to see and do at this luxury resort it makes it a great place to have your honeymoon or any other special occasion holiday.
