We have just received news from the above Lodge that this year’s numbers of Polar Bears around the Lodge are the best they have ever known.  The best day they have had was 21 bears sighted between the Lodge and their whale swim point.  The ice pack, which was still visible a week ago, has now dispersed pushing the bears back on to the coastline.

Additionally all the bears are looking fit and healthy making for very special photo opportunities – especially when you have an expert on hand to help with how to make the most of your chances.

The other news from the lodge is that the Beluga whales are back in huge numbers as well.  Imagine jumping off the back of the Zodiac in a wet suit and snorkel and listening to the whales singing to you.  They even seem to answer your own attempts of singing to them!

As this a very special destination and places are limited you need to be getting in touch with us now to ensure you are there for next year’s spectacular.

Tucked amidst the protected mangroves and sheltered coral reefs of Borneo and curled around the stunning sandy coast of Malohom Bay you’ll find Gaya Island Resort.

This beachfront resort blends in perfectly with the natural environment and offers a collection of hillside villas with views that feature the mangrove forests and surrounding canopy to the breathtaking Mount Kinabalu.

For the nature lovers among us this is the perfect place to stay and here are just a few reasons why:

–          The Proboscis (Long nosed) monkey – you will have the chance of a lifetime to see these endangered and unique monkeys in the jungle of Gaya Island Resort.

–          Turtle Rescue – this programme was set up to rescue, rehabilitate and release sea turtles. You can find more information about this at the Marine Centre on site.

–          Red Giant Flying Squirrels – take an evening stroll through the resort gardens and keep an eye out for these beautiful animals gliding from branch to branch or foraging for food.

–          Mangrove kayak – let the resident naturalist take you through the 100 year old mangrove jungle. Watch out for mangrove crabs, oriental pied hornbills, monitor lizards and many more fantastic creatures.

So if you’d like to know more about a bespoke, tailor made trip to this amazing resort and the island of Borneo please contact us on 01323 446550 or email info@experienceholidays.co.uk for more information.

The World’s Largest Marine Reserve – Pitcairn Island

The U.K. Government is creating the world’s largest marine reserve when it is endorsing the Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve. These islands are amongst the most remote places on the planet and the seas around the islands are pristine and home to a wealth of marine mammals, seabirds and fish. They are roughly 2170km (1350 miles) east south-east of Tahiti and just over 6600km (4100 miles) from Panama. The Islands’ administrative headquarters are situated in Auckland New Zealand, 5310km (3300 miles) away.

The Pitcairn Island Council fully supported raising the status of their seas and is rightly proud of their commitment to this huge marine reserve, knowing that it is safeguarding the ecosystem for the future generations. The Reserve is 322,000 square miles in size which is nearly 4 times the size of the UK. The Government is also using the most sophisticated technology for surveillance and enforcement for the MarinePark.

A good news story which we hope will be replicated in other parts of the world.
