KwaZulu Natal, the scenery seems to fit the experience – the emptiness of the plains around Isandlwana, the rolling waves on the long empty beach at Thonga and the density of the bush as you look out for rhino in Hluhluwe.  The friendliness of those that you meet along the way enliven your visit to this part of the world.

Description

Offering a mixture of amazing scenery, wildlife, experiences, history, food and beach, KwaZulu Natal has to be a destination that will please most people.  Getting there is easy as is driving around, and the people are truly welcoming.  This is Africa with a huge variety of interests and all within reasonable travelling distances.

Day 1: Durban

Spend time in Durban to acclimatise and explore the many attractions that this seaport has to offer.  With a fusion of African, Indian and European influences the food on offer has always been good – particularly their take on curries.  A visit to uShaka Marine World and the Botanic Gardens are worth pitting on your agenda.

2 nights Durban

Day 3: Drakensberg Mountains

Make your way to the beautiful Drakensburg Mountains and to a property that nestles at the foot of these.  Here you have the chance to relax with the stunning views, take yourself on hikes up into the mountains or join a full day walk with guide and lunch provided.  Archery, fishing, mountain biking and horse riding are also available.

2 nights Drakensberg Mountains

Day 5: Rorke’s Drift

Your next destination has you stepping back into the Zulu Wars and learning about Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift from both the Zulu and European points of view.  There is something special in being shown around Isandlwana (one of the few undeveloped battlefields of the world) by a Zulu and then hearing about the heroic fights as you walk through the building and grounds of Rorke’s Drift.

2 nights Rorke’s Drift

Day 7: Kosi Forest

Next spend time in the natural environment of lakes and forest, including Raffia Forests.  Drive out to the Kosi River mouth for snorkelling, swimming and a picnic.  Take a tour through the Raffia Forest looking out for the Palm Vulture, the only vegetarian vulture in the world.  Consider a canoe trip through the forests and out in to the lake.

2 nights Kosi Forest

Day 9: Beach Stay

Head to the coast for a stay close to and Indian Ocean beach.  Much of the area is protected and consequently beautifully productive for snorkelling, diving and other water sports.  Turtles haul out to lay their eggs at certain times of the year and guides will take you along the huge beach to show you their activities.  In the evening join on a scorpion and spider hunt.

3 nights Beach

Day 12: Hluhluwe National Park

For your wildlife experience head to Hluhluwe National Park, South Africa’s oldest.  This park has something like 2,000 white rhino and 500 black rhino, so you would be unlucky not to see them.  The drive to your lodge is through rolling hills with stunning views and wildlife to be seen quite regularly.  Al of the Big 5 are here as well as wild dog.  Either take yourself around the park (easy to do) or jopin an organised game drive from your lodge.

2 nights Hluhluwe

Day 14: Depart KwaZulu Natal

Head to Durban or Richards Bay for the onward or homeward journey.
