Description

One of the advantages to this itinerary is that it can be easily be a self drive or a flying safari (perhaps less stressful and quicker getting around but more expensive)

Day 1: Hazyview
From Johannesburg pick up a hire car and head due east towards the Kruger (About 4/5 hours on good tarmac roads), stopping at Hazyview. This is a good location to unwind after all your travelling. From Hazyview, you might like to take the Panorama Route – a driving route with plenty of interesting look out points to see Blyde River Canyon. If time allows, consider increasing this stay to two or even three nights.

Day 2: Kruger National Park
Today you’ll enter the World famous Kruger National Park. Your destination is a Safari Lodge based on a private concession in the Kruger National Park. Here we’d suggest a three night stay and this will usually include two game drive safaris per day. You will have time to explore the Park yourselves or watch the animals coming to the waterhole by the Lodge. For details of what has been seen and where, talk to the staff and guides at the Lodge. They will be more than happy to advise you.

The roads in Kruger are well maintained, even the dirt ones, but do not rush. It is amazing what people drive past! There are also a number of Rest Camps, often in excellent game viewing locations, for a stop for a drink or snack.

Day 5: Swaziland
This morning you will exit the Park, and then head south towards Swaziland and near to its capital Mbabane to break your journey. Here, visit a candle maker or glass factory for some locally produced crafts. It will feel a bit cooler in the mountains of Swaziland, so ensure you have a coat or jumper.

Day 6: Greater St Lucia Wetland Park
Dropping down from the mountains you will continue to head further south with your next destination being the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. This is still a remote part of the world and your vehicle will not be able to travel all the way there. We will provide you with details of where to park and where you will be met and transferred by 4×4 for two nights at a Beach Lodge. The Lodge will be situated over looking the sea and you have the chance of relaxing on pristine beaches. Here, enjoy diving, snorkelling, forest walks, kayaking and sundowners on the lake.

Day 8: Forest Lodge
You will be transferred to your Forest Lodge (a short distance away) for your next two night stay. Here you can take part in guided canoeing, walks through the Raffia forest and boat excursions on the Lake system.

Day 10: Rorke’s Drift
Leaving the coast behind, drive to Rorke’s Drift to stay at a Lodge deep in Zululand for two night stay. You will be heading back inland for this destination. Take a tour of the Battlefields, and enjoy a Zulu Boma evening. They will evoke the spirit of these extraordinary places and give you a different experience to those you have had elsewhere.

Day 12: Johannesburg
Early start today as you drive back to Johannesburg. You should allow about five and half hours for your journey back to the city airport. From here, check in for your onward or homeward journey.
