Description
Day 1: Durban
Arrive in Durban for an overnight stay. Durban has a reputation for food particularly curries so exploring the city could pay dividends.
One night Durban
Day 2: Drakensberg Mountains
Drive inland to the Drakensberg Mountains today. Stay for at least two nights in a lodge at the foot of these impressive mountains. Here the activities are centred about making the most of the stunning scenery whether on horseback or hiking. For the hiking you can choose to be guided or self guided with a chance to cool down in a mountain stream or lake.
Two nights Drakensberg Mountains
Day 4: Rorke’s Drift
The next stop is in the centre of the battlefields of the Anglo/Zulu War. Again at least two nights to make the most of this beautiful land that saw some of the bloodiest battles of this war. Ensure you join a guided tour of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift to have the best explanation of these decisive actions. It is an emotional and thought provoking day. Other tours to different battlefields or tours deep in to parts of KwaZulu Natal that are well off the usual tourist maps can be added to the time here.
Two nights Rorke’s Drift
Day 6: Hhluhluwe iMfolozi Park
The next destination is Hhluhluwe iMfolozi Park, the oldest Game reserve in Africa and we suggest a two night stay within this Park. Here all of the Big 5 can be found and your game drives morning and evening will have the guide trying to find all of them – and any other animal or bird that is on your tick list.
Two nights Hhluhluwe iMfolozi Park
Day 8: Isimangaliso Wetland Park
The World Heritage Site of Isimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly St Lucia Wetland) provides the chance of exploring wildlife and the wetlands from a different perspective – a boat or kayak. Stay in a forest lodge and explore the wetlands, lakes and different forests on foot, boat or kayak. The bird life here is spectacular as you would expect and tracking turtles can be arranged at the right time of the year. We’d recommend two nights here as a minimum.
Two nights Isimangaliso Wetland Park
Day 10: Beach Stay
The bespoke tour ends with time on the beach. All that has to be decided is whether you want the seclusion and remoteness of the lodges found along the Indian Ocean beaches of Isimangaliso Wetland Park or perhaps a B&B along the beaches that are to be found along the road back to Durban. Or perhaps do both to expand your experiences of this fascinating part of South Africa. Ensure your tailor made trip allows time to relax after so much activity and tours. At least three or four nights would ensure you are ready for your trip back home.
Four nights Beach Stay
Day 14: Depart South Africa
Return to Durban for the onward or homeward journey.

Little Gems
If you enjoyed the film ‘Zulu’, a visit to the Isandlwana Battlefield is a must – make sure you have a good guide, and you’ll see the Zulus coming up over the ridge in your minds eye.
