Peter has been unbearably excited for the last couple of weeks as the day for his departure to Kenya approached. Peter was born in Kenya and grew up as the son of the Nairobi Park Ranger – Nairobi National Park was his back yard! He is currently in Nairobi and has sent us this:
Back in Kenya
I am sitting in the Thorn Tree Cafe at the Stanley Hotel, Nairobi, reflecting on how it looks now compared to how I remember it from the distant past. Firstly, the thorn tree is still there but must be the son of the original as it has some serious growing to do. This cafe/bar was famous as the first watering hole for hunters and safari travellers from the earliest days. In a time when communication was far more hit and miss, people left messages on the board for their friends and fellow travellers telling where they were going, for how long and when to meet again. These messages are still there – but well organised and actually do not have the urgency of the old ones.
However the Tusker beer is just as good as ever, the food delicious and it is still a meeting ground for many Kenyans and travellers.
If he is able to, Peter has promised further updates – so watch this space…..
