One More Reason to Visit Namibia
There are many reasons to think of Namibiaas a destination for your next trip to Africa– the stunning scenery which is second to none in the world, wonderful wildlife, birdlife and indeed sealife. Add in that Namibia has a population of about 2 million friendly people in a country the size of France and Belgium, has good infrastructure, drives on the left and the official language is English.
The first African nation to incorporate conservation in to their Constitution and has followed words with actions by having large areas of the country as national parks or conservancy areas. They have been keen to ensure that the local tribes have benefitted from tourism by being involved in planning, sourcing food locally and providing employment, often in areas were jobs are very scarce. This has the benefit of making poaching in such areas very difficult, as the indigenous population protect their wildlife resource.
Namibia has a number of unique features that attract travellers such as the highest dunes in the world, the largest meteor ever found, the second largest canyon in the world (Fish River Canyon) and the famous desert adapted elephant and rhino in the Damaraland. Now to be added to these is the award given to the NamibRand Nature Reserve as a Dark Sky Reserve at the “Gold Tier” level (the darkest available category). This is an International award and is a first forAfricaand indeed for a developing nation.
Those of you who have gazed up at the stars from a vantage point with no light pollution will know just how many more stars (and satellites) that you can see. It is mesmeric.
The NamibRand Nature Reserve is home to Wolwedans lodges and camp sites, which have long been favourites of ours. So much so that Heather, one of the team got married here! They have always led the way with reducing their impact on the desert, being as ecofriendly as possible and developing the skills of their team. See their website (www.wolwedans.com) for news of their training school for chefs and all their other activities.
Namibiahas always been a popular destination for our clients and this is one more reason to go. Give us a call to find out more about this fascinating and beautiful country.
