Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Safari by our East African Specialist
Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s largest free standing mountain and the highest in Africa, is often seen as a challenge that cannot be resisted by all sorts of people of all ages. It has featured recently as a high profile challenge for celebrities on a fund raising climb.
At Experience Holidays we have booked climbs for honeymooners, people reaching 40, 50 and even 65 and those that want to say that they have conquered this iconic mountain. There are at least 5 different routes to the top and the one chosen does depend upon the level of fitness and climbing experience of the participants. Some routes should only be tackled by experts but others suit those who are reasonably fit. One of Kilimanjaro attraction is that it can be climbed by the inexperienced provided that they have the proper support and planning and without climbing materials. You are guided all the way and porters look after most of the equipment and assist you as you climb.
How long you take to climb also varies and the best advice would be to take it slower to allow you to acclimatise. Mountain sickness is a real danger that can affect anyone, no matter how fit. The final climb to the various peaks usually starts at midnight to ensure that you see the sunrise form one of these points, subject to weather conditions giving you a sunrise.
This is a climb that takes you through rain forest, spectacular heather and moorland and semi alpine regions before the bareness and scree of the top. Each route has its own stunning views of the peaks of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding Tanzania and Kenya countryside – it is never dull. Your guides and porters have long experience of the mountain and will do their best to ensure your time in their hands is as enjoyable as such a challenge can be.
To finish of your holiday, why not relax on an East African beach for a few days before flying home.
