The uniqueness of the Island, the fourth largest in the world, is the key reason to travel here. With 80% of its wildlife being endemic, it truly has something that no other place has to offer. Lemurs spring to mind when thinking of Madagascar and they are as diverse as the scenery of this stunning country. Here are some suggestions of places to go to see the animals and to have an adventure along the way.
Ranomafana National Park is a rainforest that has an abundance of lemur, hot springs and is famous for the amazing bamboo lemurs. Get up before dawn to join your guide as you trek through the forest to seek the wildlife, birds and flora. The late morning will see you crossing over a spindly bridge to a viilage with a fast running river and its own hot springs. Relax after your forest adventure in your own hot tub straight from the springs!
For those of you that enjoy stretching your legs then consider Ankarana as one of your stop offs on your bespoke holiday. Here the limestone rock has been eroded over the centuries making for stunning scenery and formations that are known locally as “tsingy”. It also has extensive cave systems which can be explored with a guide. Set out on one of the many hiking trails that will take you through the variety of countryside to be found here. The hike could take you along the ridges and in to the canyons that criss cross the area, through fire resistant tapia forests and open grassland.
For an experience of the dry decidous forests of western Madagascar, then time in the Kirindy area needs to be on your itinerary. Here you will find lemurs, the fossa and the giant jumping rat.
End up on one of the pristine beaches for a final underwater adventure, either diving or snorkeling, or just to relax. You will not have to fight for a place on the beach and the sundowns are second to none. What with the history of the island, the huge variety of flora and fuana, great food and the friendly, welcoming people, Madagascar is a place that you will want to keep on coming back to time after time to learn and experience all it has to offer.
