Kenya – Where the Queen began her Reign

As we plan our celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee in the coming days, the people of Kenya are equally as keen to join in the remembrances over the past 60 years. The Queen had just arrived at Treetops Lodge on the edge of the Aberdare Mountains for game viewing throughout the night, when she received notice of the death of her father.
This was one of those bitter/sweet moments for Kenya. They are rightly proud of their considered and considerate support to the new Queen, while appreciating the sadness of the occasion.
Treetops Lodge is still there, although much changed over the years and has just undergone a revamp recently. The wildlife still come down to the waterhole in front of the Lodge, which is floodlit all night, making for a different game viewing experience compared to your day tours. Nor do you have to stay awake all night to see the buffalo, bushbuck, waterbuck and, if you are lucky, a leopard, rhino or bush pig. There is a night watchman on duty all through the night who will buzz your room in the event one of the animals that you listed for being contacted comes down the waterhole.
Nor are your experiences confined to the night. On arrival you will be treated to tea and cakes as you gaze down at the day animals and birds from the top of the building. Just beware that the vervet monkeys do not pinch your cake while you are distracted! The dinner served is excellent and the service attentive and friendly. All in all a truly different part of your safari holiday.
Nor is Treetops the only such Lodge in Kenya, there are a small number of others that provide similar experiences on the Aberdare Mountains or Mount Kenya.
