Hong Kong – more than just a stopover!
View from Peak
Hong Kong has become an incredibly popular stopover destination for those travelling between the UK and Australia or New Zealand – spending a few nights to recharge and catch a glimpse of what this diverse destination has to offer. It is also popular for those exploring several Far Eastern destinations, spending a few nights in each.
However, in my opinion (and having done so myself) Hong Kong is a great destination to visit in its own right with plenty to see and do to keep a visitor as busy as they’d like to be for a week or ten days.
Aside from the fantastic cityscape, Hong Kong offers a wide array of attractions – with something to suit everyone. The historic Peak Tram climbs to Victoria Peak, where stunning views over the city can be admired day or night. Each evening, the ‘Symphony of Lights’ provides an unique experience of a laser light show across the city, set in time to music.
A large number of street markets offer an eclectic range of wares such as clothing, accessories, electronics, artwork, souvenirs and more besides. The Night Market and Ladies Market in Mongkok, and Stanley Market on Hong Kong Island are three of the most popular.
Take a cocktail cruise, or board the renowned Star Ferry for a reasonably priced experience, a traditional Junk Ship ride or even a dolphin watching cruise (pink dolphins). Visit one of the outlying islands – a world away from the modern city life, where traditional fishing villages flourish and provide an insight into ‘Old Hong Kong’. Aberdeen Fishing Village on Hong Kong Island is a traditional floating village and well worth seeing.
Head to Happy Valley for a flutter on the horses, or to the new territories to discover the traditional way of life for villagers away from the city lights. Ocean Park – Hong Kong’s original theme park – is popular for families, as is Disneyland. There are even beaches to explore, on both Hong Kong Island (Repulse Bay) and on the outer islands.
