On 28th November 2013, New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington will host the world premiere of the eagerly anticipated film – The Hobbit. Much of the film (and of the Lord of The Rings Trilogy) was filmed in stunningly beautiful locations across New Zealand, and showcases some of the fantastic and diverse scenery to be explored by visitors to this diverse country.
Wellington (fondly referred to as Wellywood by many!) is where the studios are based, and the locals are intensely proud that their city is the home of these iconic films. Various tours are available throughout the country to visit some of the many film locations used – many guided by actors that were extras in the movie.
A must-see for fans of the film is Hobbiton – located close to Matamata in the north island, this set allows you to get up close to hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, The Mill and double arched bridge to name but a few highlights. Not too far from here, you can even choose to stay on a farm in a replica hobbit hole! Queenstown and its Remarkable Mountains played host to many a scene, and the dramatic landscape here is breathtaking – a must-see whether you’re a fan of the films or not!
