Last night we went to an enthralling talk given by Alexander Reford on the topic of “Coming to Quebec: 350 years of British Travel and Travellers”. Alexander is a historian, Director of Jardins de Metis/ Reford gardens and the founder of International Garden Festival in Quebec, Canada. His passion for all of these interests came over in the talk, leaving us with the feeling of much learned and more to find out about and explore.

Quebec is one of the world’s melting pots of different cultures, creeds and ways of life which, with moments of tension along the way, has emerged in to a vibrant society that looks forward but is willing to learn from its diverse past.

One thought that kept running through my mind, was the place that gardens and wild places have in our hearts and how they influence our travel planning. The British have a reputation as keen gardeners, an accolade that we are secretly proud of. But it is a world wide passion and it is no surprise that one of the ancient 7 Wonders of the World was the hanging Gardens of Babylon.

Alexander’s description of the birth, growth and current phase of the Reford gardens left me thinking of going there as soon as possible, especially after talking to Jackie, who has visited before. But how to do it? The gardens are in the Gaspesie Region of Quebec which is as far east as you can go in Quebec Province.

We have an excellent round trip, arriving in Montreal, driving on to Quebec City – both cities well worth exploring – before heading east at a comfortable pace. With stops along the way to sample the excellent small hotels/B&Bs and even a lighthouse, the exciting and natural countryside, a trip out in to the St Lawrence for some of the best whale watching in the world, and arriving at Jardins de Metis when the gardens are in full bloom. Their seasons are compressed compared to ours and you really need to be there between mid June and August.

So if you want to be standing in front of probably the world’s best display of Himalayan blue poppies just as they are in full bloom, then get in touch and we will be more than happy to plan your trip.

If your passion is gardening and you want to see how it is practiced on all 5 continents, then do speak to us. Planning such a trip with you and finding the extraordinary is what we love doing.
