Description
Queensland is home to a vast outback region, where the fascinating history of pioneering Australia can be discovered, and where that history goes way back to a time to when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Stay on a working cattle station, and round up stock, or explore the Qantas Founders Museum.
What better way to travel there than in the comfort of the Spirit of the Outback train – this itinerary idea is just one way in which you can incorporate the train journey into your exploration of the region…
Day 1: Brisbane
Arrive into Brisbane today for a two-night stay. Dissected by the Brisbane River, this city is an eclectic mix of culture, shopping and the laidback lifestyle that epitomises Queensland. Take a riverfront walk, enjoy a sight-seeing cruise, climb the Story Bridge – one of only three bridge climbs in the world, shop at the Queen Street Mall, take a tour of the XXXX Brewery or relax on the man-made beach and lagoon at the South Bank Parklands – a city centre haven.
Day 3: Spirit of the Outback
Today, board the Spirit of the Outback train in Brisbane for the overnight journey to the outback. Choose between sleeper accommodation and economy class seating, sit back and enjoy the scenery as you travel north to Rockhampton before heading inland to the outback. Learn of local legends and stories from the pioneer days, and mingle with the locals for which the rail service is a lifeline.
Day 4: Longreach
The journey continues today, as you head further and further inland until you arrive at the town of Longreach. Spend three nights here, and visit a working cattle station, explore the historic towns of Barcaldine and Ilfracombe and wander the Qantas Founders Museum and the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame.
Day 7: Winton
Head to Winton today, for a two night stay. Winton is the gateway to Lark Quarry Conservation Park, which is the site of the only recorded dinosaur stampede on earth. There are more than 3300 fossilised footprints from approximately 95 million years ago, and the unique experience offered here gives you a chance to learn the story of the stampede, and the efforts to preserve this incredible site.
Day 9: Longreach
Return to Longreach today for the onward journey away from the outback, either by air or rail.

Little Gems
It is difficult to imagine the time when dinosaurs roamed our earth, but a visit to Winton will confirm that dinosaurs were definitely here long before we set foot on the planet.
