Two Centre City break: Montreal and Quebec City

Day 1: London to Montréal
Day 4: Montréal to Québec City
Day 7: Québec City to Montréal to London

[wptabtitle] Description [/wptabtitle] [wptabcontent]

The Province of Québec is a province of many enchanting pieces, rather like a jigsaw puzzle – the central part of the puzzle is the mighty St Lawrence as it wends its way from the North Atlantic through to the Great Lakes. Along its shores lie the great cities of Montréal and Québec – and it is these cities that form the basis of most itinerary ideas. A common tongue is where the similarity ends. A two centre city break combines the modern cosmopolitan Montréal, with the romantic old walled city of Québec. Three nights in each, linked by rail or air.

Day 1: London to Montréal
A choice of airline takes you on a direct daily flight from Heathrow; just a short flight, less than 7 hours. Three night stay in the city on arrival.

There are plenty of opportunities to explore with excursions by bus or boat, plus an excellent transport system to get you around the city. Although this is a cosmopolitan city, there are lots of beautiful historic buildings to visit, including the Notre Dame Basilica and Place Jacques Cartier. Wander up to Sherbrooke Street and browse in the designer boutiques, trend-setting art galleries and museums, including the prestigious Museum of Fine Arts in the Museum Quarter. Stroll east and enter Chinatown. Or perhaps take a guided cycle tour of the city – whilst a visit to Atwater Market is a must for gastronomes.

Day 4: Montréal to Québec City
A choice today as you move from Montréal to Québec City. The rail link offers several choices of departure time through the day, and takes approximately 3 hours. Alternatively, return to the airport and take the short internal flight between the cities.

Explore the winding side streets of this UNESCO world heritage site on foot or in a horse-drawn carriage, stroll through its oldest neighbourhoods – Petit Champlain, Place-Royale and the Old Port. The City still retains its French heritage, and has a romantic Parisian feel – and its gourmet reputation is well deserved!

A short distance out of town, and linked by local public transport services, the Montmorency Falls are well worth a visit. For a summer visit, hire a bike, and cycle out on the well maintained cycle ways.

Consider also a visit to Wendake, and immerse yourself in the traditions and contemporary culture of Québec’s only Huron-Wendat community. Perhaps include a whale watching or include an excursion to the Island of Orléans

Day 7: Québec City to Montréal to London
Return to Montréal by rail or air, and connect through on your homeward flight to London – arriving home the following morning.

Little Gems

Check the schedule, but plan to see the son et lumiere show at the Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal.  Alternatively, check out the schedules for Cirque du Soleil which has its roots in the little town of Baie-St-Paul, a few miles north east of Quebec City on the St Lawrence.
