Description
Here we suggest a self-drive tour of the wild and beautiful coast of Newfoundland’s west coast and Northern Peninsula. Explore Gros Morne National Park, a natural marvel of fjords, forests and mountains, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its exceptional beauty and unique geology.
Day 1: Deer Lake/Humber Valley
On arrival into Deer Lake airport pick up your rental car and drive the short distance to Humber Valley. The Humber Valley stretches for 70 kms, sliced by the mighty Humber River, home to trophy-sized salmon. The River flows into Deer Lake, a 30 km fresh water lake, and continues to the seaport of Corner Brook, the region’s largest centre with 25,000 people. Humber Valley is one of Canada’s best-kept secrets, with its diverse environment of unspoiled nature that touches each one of its visitors.
Humber Valley 3 nights
Day 4: Gros Morne National Park (South side)
Depart Humber Valley and head north along the Viking Trail (Route 430) to Gros Morne National Park – this 1805 sq km park offers beauty and adventure that are unsurpassed by any in the world.
Woody Point 1 night
Day 5: Port Au Choix
Depart Gros Morne National Park and drive north continuing along the Viking trail. Visit Port au Choix National Historic Site and view artifacts of the Maritime Archaic people who occupied the region over 3700 years ago.
Port Au Choix 1 night
Day 6: Quirpon Island
Continue on to Quirpon dock. A unique remote Island experience awaits you! Stay in a recently refurbished original Light keeper’s residence. Relax and enjoy your Quirpon Island experience – whale watch from the Helipad, or the enclosed glass observation house or roam the rugged landscape. In season Quirpon Island is one of Newfoundland’s best locations for Iceberg viewing as they drift the Labrador Current on their journey south.
Quirpon Island 3 nights
Day 9: Gros Morne National Park (North side)
Depart Quirpon Island and transfer back over to the dock. Depart the Great Northern Peninsula and head back south along the Viking Trail to the north side of Gros Morne National Park. Enroute be sure to visit Table Point Ecological Reserve.
Rocky Harbour 2 nights
Day 11: Depart Deer Lake
Drive back to Deer Lake, dropping off the hire car at the airport for the flight home or to continue your adventure.

Little Gems
Make sure you stay on Quirpon Island – the lighthouse keepers cottages is simple, but lovely. Travel in June for the best view of icebergs potentially the size of apartment blocks.
