The Garden Route – This is a great introduction to Southern Africa and a favourite with many holiday makers. Start with a few days in Cape Town itself to allow time to explore a beautiful city full of history, spectacular mountains, a lively waterfront and a variety of museums. Certainly you should consider a trip to Robben Island and a full day exploring the Cape Peninsula with its wealth of wildlife and a view of the Atlantic Ocean meeting the Indian Ocean.
Drive in to the wine lands to visit some of the best vineyards in the world and sample some of them when you stay there. The food that goes with the wine has a very strong French/African influence making for great meals in wonderful locations. At the right time of the year you should head to Hermanus or de Hoop to see the Southern Right whales in the Bay there. They come so close inshore that you can see them with ease from the cliffs. All along the route you will find areas of the natural fynbos (South Africa’s unique varied natural flora) and you should take time to see and learn about it.
If you plan well and do not rush this trip, you will have time to visit the Cango Caves, ostrich farms and some unique game reserves along the route. For those that want an adrenalin rush then Tsitsikamma offers you the chance to take a rocket boat up the Wild River or zip trail through the trees. End up in Port Elizabeth and a few days at AddoNational Park which boast the Big 7 – the usual land Big 5 and add in whales and sharks as well.
We like to recommend small owner run B&Bs, lodges and hotels along the road as they usually provide a very personal quality service and will let you know where to eat locally or places to visit while staying with them.
